Without fail, we change our wardrobes with the seasons, but what about our skincare regime?
With so many hero serums, must-have cleansers and game-changing acids in the market, it can be a minefield to put together a simple daily skincare regime to follow, let alone changing it to suit each season. As the sunny, bright days turn cooler and we slip from summer into autumn, Dave English, Head of Beauty at Matrix, shares his tips for what its actually necessary to focus on to look after your skin in the winter months.
It’s essential to take a pro-active approach to managing your winter skincare to address the autumn/winter challenges and keep your skin healthy and glowing. There is less sun in the winter months but UVA remains a threat to long-term skin health. Think about all the ski tans you see! As one of the biggest causes of premature aging, protecting your skin from UVA is key, even in winter. Keep applying an SPF as part of your regime when out and about.
Drier winter air can be a problem, along with the rapid temperature changes when you go between indoor and outdoor. Use a moisturiser, particularly on exposed skin to maintain healthy skin hydration. Depending on your skin type, winter may demand a heavier moisturiser, particularly on hands, and make sure you always have a lip balm handy. If you can, moisturise soon after washing to help maintain moisture levels.
Light oils are a nice option to moisturisers to avoid dry winter skin and add radiance, lipid barrier support (your own waterproofing protective barrier) and increase hydration levels. People are often reluctant to use oils owing to the fear of making their skin ‘oily’ or ‘greasy’ but they can actually work wonders to nourish and balance oily skin. Try a few different oils and see if they suit your skin.
Exfoliate to compliment the skins natural renewal process but don’t overdo it. With the spare time you sometimes get during darker evenings, treat yourself to a mask and “me time” instead. Remember: treat, don’t beat!
As your tan fades consider a self-tan, particularly at party times – master the application well before the big event to avoid any last-minute orange disasters! Enjoy the change in season knowing you are doing the best you can to keep your skin healthy.
