Life@Matrix: Sandip: Head of Marketing

I am Head of Marketing for our retail and airline division and I am responsible for delivering amazing brands and products for our clients.

My alarm goes off…

Between 6am and 6.30am and often involves lots of snoozing! I am a terrible sleeper so always set my alarm earlier than I need to so I can wake up slowly and don’t have to rush around.

I’m responsible for…

Our trend, market and consumer insights, brands strategy and product development – everything that’s needed to get an idea from concept to reality.

I got the job…

I have always worked in product development and buying, my last role was as Beauty Buyer at M&S, where I was lucky enough to work across every beauty category going! I learnt how to create brands, develop amazing products for our customers and got to know the industry.  I also worked on some amazing brand collaborations with industry leaders and celebrities, one of my favourites was definitely Dermot O’Leary.

My typical day…

Involves meeting with my team to discuss progress on live projects, which could cover anything from brand new briefs from clients, product brainstorms or working with our design team to bring our ideas to life.  I work really closely with our Creative Team as well as Sales and Supply Chain to make sure all functions are working harmoniously.

My go-to snack at work is…

I’m trying to be healthy and we get a great selection of fruit, nuts and healthy bars to keep us going, which stops me from reaching for chocolate and crisps! I’m also trying to limit my caffeine intake so I sip on herbal teas post lunch.

Favourite part of my job…

I absolutely love brainstorms and anything to do with new ideas and creativity and how we relate them to the consumer – really understanding how we can make people’s lives better through our products is the best part.

After work I…

Could be doing anything from binge watching Netflix, to meeting up with friends or going to a hot yoga class, which really helps me clear my head.

What would be your advice for someone looking to get into this job?

My background in retail really helped me understand the consumer journey and how they navigate brands and products – when we approach a new idea it’s great to be able to get into their shoes.  I think any experience, whether in marketing, buying, manufacturing or retail, is an asset.
