In 2018, as part of an investment plan to improve the quality and completely reinvent the offering in First Class, British Airways approached Matrix to seek a British ‘grass roots’ brand to collaborate with for new loungewear and slippers.
Matrix set to work to look for the perfect brand partner for these items to be launched in the 100th year of Britain’s legacy airline. It soon became apparent through conversations that Temperley London, owned by the British designer Alice Temperley MBE, would bring a designer’s eye to the project. Famous for tailoring beautiful ranges for the catwalk, meeting Alice at her boutique store in London it was clear she had some stylish ideas for Male and Female loungewear sets.
Determined to add luxury and design loungewear that customers would continue to use beyond their flight, pieces that customers would find comfortable and durable to keep and use time and again was key to the creation process.
Inspired by her own creations and effortlessly comfortable, the loungewear is made from cotton, with the female tops featuring a unique satin tuxedo wrap formation, nipped in at the waist to give a more form fitting silhouette. The male top is equally inspired designed with a relaxed crew neck and satin “v” feature, the corresponding trousers are equally soft and feature a satin ribbon drawstring to tie the pieces together. The slippers take their design from Temperley’s own court shoes, a challenging brief that delivers better fit and comfort.
The new loungewear and slippers are offered in black in small, medium and large sizes and will appear on board from 31st March 2019 and is expected to change tones throughout the contract term.
Collaborating with Matrix on the British Airways loungewear for First class was a seamless creative process. The team at Matrix immediately understood the designs, silhouettes and detailing that I wanted to achieve. Their communication was excellent, sharing updates and developments and I am very proud of the product. Luxurious, elevated loungewear which gives British Airways customers an authentic experience of my brand.
